Initiated in 1973, its composition beholds its whole fulfillment after more than four decades. It is the testimony of an unwaveringly timeless inspiration, of which the expectant present asserts itself beyond history. Connecting wide and contrasted scenes, it sets its coherence within its very dynamics, playing with chiaroscuro , between choral splendor, operatic jubilation and hurricane of spirits beyond graves.

The different parts formerly scattered around are finally gathered in all their glory, finding their proper place in the grand scale of a now complete work, topped off with the bright blaze of a Grand Finale.

The two-disc DVD set features THE CROSSROADS OF TIMES, 115 minutes of conversations with Christian Vander on composing each movement of the trilogy. Through a process of digging, expanding, anchoring and changing directions, his unique approach continues to propel Magma’s music forward.

In May 2015, Coralie Van Rietschoten traveled with the band on their first Chinese tour. Glimpses of Shenzhen’s tropical vegetation, Beijingers exercising in public parks, and Shanghai’s psychedelic city lights are interspersed with concert footage.

Mythes & Légendes – Epok 5

After the success of the DVDs EPOK 1-2-3-4, published in 2006 and 2007, the Triton again welcomed Magma in June 2011. This was for a nine concerts cycle to complete the DVD series “Myths & Legends ” .

EPOK 5 not only includes pieces from 1971, 1977 and 1978 but also Félicité Thösz , the latest MAGMA release, heard here in a version prior to the recording of the album. There are, in addition, 20 minutes of unpublished music.

A dynamic and extremely musical edit enables the listener to enjoy the band at the height of its powers, showcasing the intensity of each composition and the technical prowess of the musicians. The exceptional sound quality was captured as usual by Francis Linon who knows, better than anyone, how to record the power and musicality of MAGMA.

No special guest players of great renown on this DVD, but we do add 2 highly-motivated and skilled young horn players to give the band some extra muscle in flagship numbers such as Zess and Otis. These 4 weeks of sold-out concerts end with a stupendous finale which finds 16 musicians on stage at the Triton giving a mega performance of Kobaia, one which will live in our memories forever! Following the epic, the third volume lays it out with Kohntarkosz, the 1973 masterpiece which was a decisive turning point in the development of the Vander odyssey.

The DVD takes us up to 1979, with extracts from the album Attahk, given masterful interpretations here by a line-up comprised of the present-day core members of the group and the third star guest, Benoit Widemann, who, as always, plays his Mini-Moog brilliantly.
Magma has never stopped innovating, or opening new tracks. Magma still is Magma, powerful and deep-seated, lyrical and orchestral, unique!

May 2005 Magma took over Paris venue ‘The Triton’ for 4 weeks with an ambitious, over the top project – a retrospective of 35 years of Magma music showcasing some of the best known pieces from the years 1970 to the present.
Celebrity guests such as Klaus Blasquiz, Jannick Top or Benoit Widemann, not to mention many young talented musicians, gave their all to play this unique music with the passion and fervour that it demands.
These 4 sell out weeks were, without any shadow of doubt, a major success which more than paid back the enormous amount of effort needed to get these 8 hours of music into full focus.
This is the first of a series of 4 DVDs which capture these unforgettable moments for posterity, where the joy of playing this outstanding music is only equalled by the rapturous response of the audience.

Hit Squad’ footage. This 30 minute documentary formed the prologue to the Trianon concerts. Twenty seven former members of the group participate in this moving tribute to Christian, the man and his music, and we also see amazing young Zeuhl cadet Fabien in action on the kit.

After a first decade which culminated in the Olympia Retrospective of June 1980, Magma took over Bobino for 3 weeks in may 1891 and thus commenced a new phase in its musical evolution.

Most of the pieces presented here have never been recorded in the studio, notably the electric version of ” Zess “, illuminated by the vocal prowess of Christian Vander and the furious madness of Jean-Luc Chevalier’s guitar playing. This alone justifies the purchase of this DVD which bursts with incredible energy.
